Brown Bird IX

I opened my eyes this morning to an empty house. No one looking at me, no one waiting, no one breathing. I couldn’t breathe, so I screamed. I screamed again, then again, then again, till water dripped on the pillow and my throat had nothing left to give me. I stared at the wall, through veils of water, and collapsed again.

When I finally woke, I was still screaming.
